Starting January 9, 2025, drivers in Jalisco will be fined for using license plate holders or any other items that obstruct the visibility of vehicle plates. This measure, implemented by the Traffic Police, aims to ensure compliance with mobility regulations and strengthen security and transparency in vehicle identification.

Statements from Authorities

According to Guadalupe Rito Camarena, Operational Director of the Traffic Police Department, the main issue with license plate holders is that they often cover important elements needed to identify the plates.

“Most car dealerships use license plate holders to promote their business, and they typically include advertising for the dealership where the vehicle was purchased. However, for us as preventive police officers, it is easier if the plate is completely unobstructed because there are QR codes around the plate,” explained Rito Camarena.

She also emphasized that these security codes, located around the plates, are essential for verifying whether a plate is authentic or counterfeit. “The license plate holders cover them, and for that reason, it becomes difficult for us to identify if a plate is fake or cloned,” she added.

Implications for Drivers

The financial penalty for this violation ranges from 150 to 200 Measurement and Update Units (UMA), depending on the severity of the infraction. Considering the 2025 value of the UMA at 113.14 pesos, fines can range between 16,971 and 22,628 pesos.

Recommendations to Avoid Fines

  1. Remove license plate holders: Ensure your vehicle’s plates are fully visible.
  2. Check the condition of the plates: Verify that the numbers, letters, and security codes are legible and not covered.
  3. Avoid obstructions: If using accessories like bike racks, ensure they do not block the plates.

Commitment to Road Safety

This measure seeks not only to regulate the proper use of plates but also to facilitate the work of authorities in preventing vehicle-related crimes.
