This Friday, May 9, the iconic USCGC Eagle (WIX-327), the tall ship of the United States Coast Guard, docks at Pier 2 of the Puerto Vallarta Cruise Terminal, where it will remain until Monday, May 12. Known as "America’s Tall Ship," the Eagle is a three-masted barque that continues to serve as a training vessel and ambassador of goodwill across the globe.

A Historic Vessel with International Roots

Originally built in 1936 in Germany and christened Horst Wessel, the ship was taken by the United States as part of World War II reparations. Since 1946, the vessel has served as a sail training ship for cadets of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Today, it remains the only active square-rigged sailing ship in U.S. government service.

Training Future Leaders at Sea

The Eagle is much more than a majestic vessel. It is a floating classroom and leadership development platform. Cadets aboard receive rigorous training in navigation, seamanship, sail handling, first aid, and teamwork. Sailing under wind power across international waters, they gain not only technical knowledge but also experience that shapes their resilience and decision-making—essential for future officers of the U.S. Coast Guard.

A Symbol of Friendship and Maritime Exchange

Puerto Vallarta’s reception of the Eagle underscores the city’s growing importance in international maritime routes. More than a port call, this visit represents a cultural and diplomatic exchange that strengthens the historical ties between Mexico and the United States through mutual respect and collaboration at sea.

The arrival of the USCGC Eagle offers residents and visitors a rare glimpse into a rich maritime tradition that bridges continents, generations, and shared values of service and commitment.
