Originally known as Las Peñas de Santa María de Guadalupe, the locality was granted municipal status on May 31, 1918, through a decree issued by the Congress of the State of Jalisco. Fifty years later, in 1968, Puerto Vallarta was officially declared a city, in response to its increasing population, economic expansion, and emerging role as a tourist hub.
